Question 4 What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Question 3: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Research
Before we started planning and constructing our music video, a lot of research had to take place in order to make the production of our  video run smoothly and effectively. It also allowed us helped us work out how we wanted our video to look visually.

YouTube allowed us to look at music videos from a variety of different pop indie artists. this gave us an idea of the visual style and codes and conventions of this type of music video. Youtube.Com allows us to access many Indie pop music videos and it is easily.

We are living in an era where the Internet and various different social networking and blogs are used  as a way of finding out information of new songs and artists. Face book (social networking site) allows individuals to upload songs and music videos from a variety of sources such as vimeo and youtube. Facebook exposes me to new songs. It also allows people to comment on the video, making us critics. We are able to comment on the things that we like and dislike about the music video.  Its a very social and relaxed way to find out about music and express your views.

Vimeo also allowed us to access music videos from old media students. This allowed us to see what worked well and what can be improved. I found the evaluation of student music  videos very helpfully as it made me very critical on what worked well and what was too ambitious for our small scale small budget music videos.

The research for my digipak and  and  involved me using a variety of web sites such as HMV, and Amazon as well as google images. HMV, allowed me to browse a variety of digipaks and analyse the , price, layout and it also had customer ratings, which gave me an idea of how popular that song was. Whereas Amazon allowed me to search music by genre, this was particular useful in the research of my ancillary products as it allowed me to see a variety of different indipop digipaks.

Planning Video

Before we started the production of our music video we had a lot of planing to do. We started off by using a digital camera to take images of ideas we wanted to use in our music video. we then uploaded these images onto final cut pro, where we was able to make an aromatic story board.

We used blogger in the planning and evaluation stages.
  • We were able to look at various different blogs which allowed us to Analise other pop indie digipaks and music videos.

Construction

We used a variety of media technologies in the construction of our music video.

  • Brand new state of the art video cameras
  • Memory cards
  • Lighting kit
  • Tripod
We used the equipment listed above when we filmed our music video.

During the editing process we used

  • Mac computers
  • Hard drives
  • Final cut pro

To edit our footage we used Final cut pro
This software allowed us to do a number of things.

We used the idea of spiting up peoples bodies and combining it with another persons. We done this with faces and bodies.

I used the crop key to get the section of the persons face that I wanted to use. I then placed the cut up images on top of each other on the time line so when the footage was played it created one person.
At first i found this as a challenge as it was hard to connect the faces, and still make it look like a face. However with a little practice it was alot easier to do.

We also played around with speed in our music video. we done this so it created the illusion that the events that were occurring were repetitive and he always went out with other girls and stood up his girlfriend.  (cmd j)- this allowed you to change the speed of a clip.

in these clips we used final cut pro to adjust the colours and increase the brightness so it made the image quality look better. In addition to this we used the effect "Dazzle". this made the sprinkles on the girls lips look a lot more shine and sparkle.

A tool that we used quite a lot in our music video was 'chroma key'. I found this tool tricky to use at first as there was alot of darkness in the shots therefor there was a risk of us effecting the character we had in our shot. i then used 'colour picker' this allowed me to change the background colour. once i chose the colours that i thought suited the scene and fitted in with the music I added a transition and another colour. the different transitions added allowed the colours to change behind the artist in an interesting way.

to create my ancillary products i used photo shop.
  •  Used custom shapes to add butterfly's and i changed the colours of them.
  •  I put a purple filter over this image so it fits into the style of the rest of my digi pak as the picture was originally too dark and i don't think it fitted in well with the visual style of the digipak.
  •  I changed the brightness of this image as it made the picture look brighter and nicer.

  •  i used the same image with a purple filter for my advertisement
  • I added text to my advertisement
  • i also added a transparent grey filter behind my text as it made my writing stand out, as before it was hard to read the writing.

Question 2: How effectively is the combination of your main product and ancillary advertisment

I think my music video and ancillary products link relatively well however it does have some strengths and weaknesses. I think the main weaknesses in the link of my ancillary products and my music video is the visual style. in our music video there is urban scenes such as the main artist out side in some shots whereas others were done in the studio up gains a green screen , where we then changed the colours too bright primary colours. So there was already a contrast in the visual style in our music video, however I believe this worked really well, as it conformed with the conventions f an indie-pop music video. the pop aspects was represented from the colourful footage taken in the studio where as edgy rock aspect was represented by the outside shots. I believe this combination of visual style worked well and the audience reaction also suggested this.

however i found it difficult to create my ancillary products so it had a pop feminine feel and an edgy rock feel. The contrast between the pastel shades and and darker grey shades did not work particular well.
In order to combat this issue I used images directly from my music video  and on the photo shoot i tried to take similar images so it keeps with the visual style of a pop indie digipak .
These images are stills from my music video and they show my visual inspiration for my advertisement.

Overall I think my ancillary Texts went quite successful and my target audience will be attracted to it for a variety of reasons:

  • Similar colours used in the video and products
  • artist is styled the same
  • the artist is on the front cover and on the inside therefor they will easily be able o associate her and he music video. this is particular use full especially for a new indie pop artist.
  • Images have been used from the video on the products so the audience will easily be able to link them .

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use develop use, develop or challange forms and conventions of real media products?

La Roux bullet proof has a similar visual style in the advertisement and album cover. The visual style in both products are quite similar and  i tried to do this for my digipak . In terms of use of image and colours.

This is the album cover from Ameries album love and war. this was my original inspiration for my advertisement as I like the graphics used and i thought it wild fit in with an indie pop genre. and i also thought it would suit my audience. however when it came to the production of my advertisement products i found it difficult to create the graphics, as it didn't look very professional. Instead i simplified this idea and i used a butterfly symbol and used it on all the panels of my digipak and on my advertisement product.

Florance and the Machines ancillary products both contain the same image. After doing some research i realised that many digipaks and advertisement products contain the same image. therefor the image i decided to use for my advertisement was the image that was on the inside of my digipak

  •  Same colours used
  • all the products have the same visual style
  • attracts its target audience
  • Conforms to the conventions of an pop indies artist digipak and advertisment.

photos for digipak and advertisment (planning)

This images were taken directly from our music video. I have chosen these images in particular as it allows our audience to identify our music video with the digipak/advertisement. This is particularly important for an up and coming artist. Through out our music video we have split images so in terms of style and I think these images work quite well for my digipak and advertisement.

This image above is the image of the artist. i am going t use this image for the front of my digipak as my audience will be able to easily associate the artist with the digipak and the advertisement.
These images are feminine and it fits in with the ‘pop’ genre of our song. The images shows the artist sitting  backwards on a chair, the position she is sitting in shows she has a relaxed and care free approach to life. Therefore I think it will suit our audience. The image of the artist is also clear so our audience will be able to easily identify her and ‘4LW’.

Do's and Dont's of design work (planning)

Do's:
- Use a clear font.
- Use appropriate sizes for both images and fonts.
- Use clear, in focus images so the audience can see at a glance.
- Use photos that are an appropriate shape for the page.
- Use a layout that follows the rule of thirds for composition when taking photographs.
- Use an appropriate type face that follows genre conventions and a particular style.
- Be careful where you place the font. The font should follow genre conventions and be clear from a distance.
- Follow the conventions of the three colour rule and use colour that is appropriate for images, font and background.
- Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioning the barcode, date, copyright, titles and artist names.

Dont's:

 -Stretch images
- Use layer styles
- Use unnecessary effects that do not suit the genre
- Use a font just because you like it. What you may like, may not fit in with the target genre and therefore the target audience.
- Feel like you need a different photo for every panel. Be creative in what you are doing.

Analisis of Advertisments (research)

I think this type of advertisement would work well for our artist; as it contains a large image of the artist and her name is in a large clear font. This enables her fans and possible target audience to identify her easily. The bold font and the colours used stand out therefor it takes a short time for a person to process the information therefor making it a successful advert.

The bright colour scheme is youthful, the use of a bold black font and a black and white image gives this advertisment an edgey feel therfor making it appealing to an indi-pop audiance menmner. The name of the group is in a large bold font and it isblue, this causes it to stand out from the rest of the poster as it does not follow the colour scheme. However the size of the font for some of the information is quite small.

The colours and the layout of this advertisement would be appealing to an indi pop audience. The use of dark colours and a hint of red symbolises a rebellious youth. In addition the font is large and white therefor is stands out against the dark background. The most important information such as the name of the artist and the date of the gig is in a thinner font therefor it stands out from the rest of the writing.

Analysis of digipak (research)

I think this album cover makes a statement therefore it attracts teenagers. It also has the artists name in a clear bold font; this is vital for an upcoming indie-pop artist as it helps them to get recognition. The images used are also fun. In each box there is a separate image, for my digipak I think this is something I can use for inspiration as we have used a lot of squares with different images in them.

This digipak has the main artist ‘PINK’, who fills up the majority of the front cover, and the back cover. The image is in black and white and there is pink writing over her but the transparency has been changed so you can see the artist under the writing. This relates to our genre as it is simple, however affective as the image used represents a rebellious girl; and our female teenage audience will be attracted to this. This digipak relates to our pop indie genre because of the color used, and the font type.

This Digipak stand out to me quite a lot, because of the use of colours and the general layout and design of the digipak.  Compared to the digipaks above I think this one looks alot more professional, this is due to the fact that 'Amerie' is a more established artist.  I think this digipak relates to my genre and audience as it looks edgy and some of the images and colours used can appeal to an indie-pop audience. The use of blacks and darker colours on the digipak fits in with the indie scene and it will attract our target audience. The main images in this digipak is the main artist and I think this is important for an upcoming artist as there audience will be able to recognise them straight away.
